Limit Field Operators

Limit fields used in the BASIC SEARCH mode, when combined with other search terms, are particularly useful for focusing or limiting a search. See the appropriate Database Description for a complete list of limit fields for each database. The Database Description tab is available at the top of the Documentation screen.

Note: The operators and, or, not, and in do not require brackets.

Searching with a limit field

Example
Search for a symposium in the document type field, enter the following text in the BASIC SEARCH entry box, including brackets and the short field designation:
symposium in dt

Example
Search for french in the Language of Document field:
french in la

Example
Search for records that contain all elements specified within the same paragraph, such as - Google, Yahoo, Alta Vista. All brackets and parentheses should be included in the BASIC SEARCH entry box:
<paragraph>(Google, Yahoo, Alta Vista)

Searching with a limit field containing numeric data

Example
Search for all records that have a publishing year less than 1984. The search selects records that contain all elements you specify, but will not be ranked for relevance (unlike the and operator where records are ranked for relevance).
<all>(py<1984)

Example
Combine a numeric-field range search with another search term.
(py>2001) and dividends
